A decade ago, ‘tweeting’ was something that we associated with birds and we ‘followed’ chiefly some religion. But times are different now as human beings have started ‘tweeting’ and ‘following’ other human beings. Just six years ago, this amazing social networking service named Twitter was born which has colored every aspect of our lives in its hue today. Equally amazing is the fact that what started as a medium for sending short messages became a habit, a necessity and a home to more than 500 million people in a short span of six years.
As Twitter celebrates its 6th anniversary, it is christened as ‘the largest’ open communication platform where a single person can connect with millions of other people in a flicker of second.
The grand celebration of Twitter’s successful completion of 6 years on the web also commemorates its modest beginnings of which frequent downtime and malfunctions were very much a part. But its creators belonging to Odeo – a podcasting company – had full faith in its potential and today its worth as well as importance is as visible as the mighty sun. Now talking in terms of hashtags and using Twitter handles have become as usual as eating meals or drinking water. Our movies, TV shows and celebrities seem to be fonder of them than anyone else. In fact, celebrities use their Twitter nicknames to reach out to their fans.
Nevertheless, popularity of Twitter continues to be threatened by web giants like Facebook and Google. Facebook’s IPO has really proved to be a nightmare for Twitter and torrential rains of questions regarding similar intentions on Twitter’s part continue to torment it. It is quite difficult to say with determination if or not Twitter will go public in the near future and will it remain independent or be gulped by even bigger giants like Microsoft, Apple and Google.
Only time will tell the fate of Twitter. What we can do is wish Twitter a very best of luck in upcoming years.
